[The following is from Chapter 2 of the Hitchhiker's Guide]

Here's what the Encyclopedia Galactica has to say about alcohol. It says that alcohol is a colourless volatile liquid formed by the fermentation of sugars and also notes its intoxicating effect on certain carbon-based life forms.

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy also mentions alcohol. It says that the best drink in existence is the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.

It says that the effect of a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is like having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick.

The Guide also tells you on which planets the best Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters are mixed, how much you can expect to pay for one and what voluntary organizations exist to help you rehabilitate afterwards.

Here is the audience participation bit. Below is the list of ingredients for a PGGB. You use the boxes to suggest what you think is the most appropriate substitution for the ingredients. At the end of the day, I'll compile the answers and post them up somewhere.

Notes:
1. We're going for authenticity here, not good taste.
2. Ingredients must be things that you reckon you could actually get your hands on. This may include obscure bottles of things you can get friends in other countries to bring you or equipment you could pinch from your university's chemistry department.
3. Feel free to be poetic about your description of the ingredients.
4. Also feel free to refer to other resources on this.
5. Do not confused PGGBs with PLGBs. Later we may see what happens when you combine the two. Fair warning will be given for those who will wish to retreat to a safe distance.
6. Gin cannot be the answer for all of them.
7. If by some sheer miracle you do come up with something that won't kill people I am not honour-bound to drink it and neither are you. We might anyway, but that's different.
8. The olive is probably an olive.

Poll #156928 Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 25

Take the juice from one bottle of that Ol' Janx Spirit, it says.

Pour into it one measure of water from the seas of Santraginus V - Oh that Santraginean sea water, it says. Oh those Santraginean fish!!!

Allow three cubes of Arcturan Mega-gin to melt into the mixture (it must be properly iced or the benzine is lost).

Allow four litres of Fallian marsh gas to bubble through it, in memory of all those happy Hikers who have died of pleasure in the Marshes of Fallia.

Over the back of a silver spoon float a measure of Qualactin Hypermint extract, redolent of all the heady odours of the dark Qualactin Zones, subtle sweet and mystic.

Drop in the tooth of an Algolian Suntiger. Watch it dissolve, spreading the fires of the Algolian Suns deep into the heart of the drink.

Sprinkle Zamphuor.

Add an olive.

You forgot the part that goes "Then drink. Very, very carefully" or similar.

There was a reason for this.

This reminds me of my newly invented drink (thought up whilst emailing [info]shadow_jess yesterday). Based on the TVR concept (also: on Saturday we discovered VCRs - vodka, Cointreau (actually it was orange triple sec, but anyway), & Red Bull. Sounds completely evil. Actually tastes really rather nice.). Anyway.

Take appropriately sized measures of tequila & vodka. Put in blender with ice & a handful of raspberries. Blend viciously. Remove, add Red Bull (you can't put the RB in the blender for obvious reasons), & stir. Drink. Alcoholic *&* good for you! (raspberries = fruit, which are healthy)

Alternatively, drink a Burning Bob for a similar effect.

Hmm. I think it's about time the London geek scene put on a field demo of a proper Burning Bob. Perhaps in the Purple Turtle. [info]reddragdiva will have to demonstrate first, of course....

Me? I'll document it. *waves camera and grins evilly*

Hmmm, I'm tempted to make that, using my ingredients....

I think, whatever goes in it, for once you should use NO FUCKING RED BULL. Get over it.

Care to explain the reason for todays vitriol?

Or do you feel that if you leave it too long between angry comments that I might actually start to think you're a nice person or something?

yeah, pretty much. But that wasn't meant as a nasty comment.

ps: Note sarcasm in above comment. Most of the time I do think you're a nice person, you just don't realise that you come across as agressive and nasty now and again.

My version intended to be both within the spirit of it but drinkable, if not necessarily nice.

Hertford College bar version was six shots topped up to a pint with lemonade (blue version) or orange juice (green). Certainly vodka and gin involved, probably tequila, definitely blue curacao (for the colour) and unfortunately malibu, which was what made me not drink them, not sure what else. One or two people were infamous for being able to drink more than 3 of them, in relatively quick succesion, and not fall over. Bloody good value they were too.

Yes, yours does sound rather nice, and not at all like it would be a good idea to draw up a will before attempting to drink it.

Despite the principle ingredient being absinthe? Oh well, I guess I didn't suggest any tequila at least. *this* time.

Are you planning to mix all of them and have a big taste test? Can I come?

[info]ali_in_london

July 15 2003, 15:20:21 UTC 8 years ago

I think all of them at once would be a bad idea. If the opportunity presents itself, I may try one or two on the list.

Is there anyway to get LiveJournal to display the results ordered by person not by question? Basically, how do I see the whole drink people have suggested rather than what everyone thinks one ingredient should be?

You wait until later when I post the results up exactly like that on one page ;)

That's something I've wanted several times as well.

There's an entry in Zilla concerning this, but so far nothing has happened. (Patches welcome, I'm sure.)
